The library was established in 1972 as a unit of the Department of Selection and Genetics of Microorganisms at the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Ural Scientific Centre in the USSR Academy of Sciences, and since 1988 the library is the unit of the Institute of Ecology and Genetics of Microorganisms, the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The profile of acquisition of the documentation includes biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, and ecology. The information-bibliographic activity is provided with the use of Internet-connected computers.
Since 1996 the library has being supplied with annual subscription to “Current Contents”, in the section “Life Sciences” that covers over 500 journals. The library stock comprises above 19 thousands items of books and periodicals of native and foreign origin. The library holds the bulk of theses that have been defended at the Dissertation Council of the Institute according to the specialties “Microbiology” and Allergology and Immunology”.
